UNDP and Mauritius sign agreement to promote low-carbon electric public bus transport

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed an agreement, yesterday, 06 December 2022, regarding the implementation of the six-year project, ‘Promoting low-carbon electric public bus transport in Mauritius’, at the seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, in Port Louis.

The signatories were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail, Mrs Shakuntala Gujadhur-Nowbuth, and the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Amanda K. Serumaga.

The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo; the UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa, Ms Ahunna Eziakonwa; the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Lisa Simrique Singh; and other personalities were present at the signing ceremony.

The main objectives of the project, which will benefit from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding, are to promote capital investments into developing, sustainable transport infrastructure to reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions in Mauritius so as to mitigate climate change, as well as to engage and build technical capacities of transport-related policymakers, regulatory and other government agencies, financial institutions and the private sector.

Before the signing ceremony, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ms Ahunna Eziakonwa, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade.

She was accompanied by the UN Resident Coordinator in Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Lisa Simrique Singh, and the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Amanda K. Serumaga.

Earlier, Ms Ahunna Eziakonwa attended the official launch of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Investor Map for Mauritius, prepared by the UNDP in partnership with the Economic Development Board (EDB).

The SDG Investor Map is a tool meant to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development and to enable investors make informed decisions on where to allocate capital.

The document details 17 Investment Opportunity Areas across six sectors that can generate returns and create positive impact on the national development priorities.

During her stay in Mauritius, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa will also participate in the 2022 African Economic Conference (AEC), jointly organised by the African Development Bank, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the UNDP, scheduled from 9 to 11 December 2022, in Balaclava, Mauritius. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Supporting climate-smart development in Africa’.

The event will bring together a variety of stakeholders, namely policymakers, climate experts, the private sector, researchers, and youth, to discuss the challenges posed by climate change, identify opportunities and strategies for adaptation and mitigation, draw lessons from successes, identify key strategies for financing mobilisation and draft an action plan to support the low-carbon and climate-resilient development of Africa.
