Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Acting Deputy Executive Director at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Director of UNEP Corporate Services Division headquartered in Kenya, Ms Sonja Leighton-Kone, called on the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, at his office in Port Louis, today.
In a statement, Ms Leighton-Kone deemed her meeting with Minister Ganoo as a constructive engagement. She added that it provided the occasion for UNEP to reassure the Minister and the Government of Mauritius of the continued support of the agency.
While Mr Ganoo expressed his gratitude to UNEP for the endeavours to support Mauritius and its people, Ms Leighton-Kone in turn thanked the Government of Mauritius for the excellent work being done in terms of progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also for the ambitious targets set in that context.
The UNEP Acting Deputy Executive Director recalled, too, that the focus of UNEP was the planetary crisis, climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and their nexus.
She underlined that Mauritius, as a Small Island Developing State, was bearing the burden of the disasters and risks resulting from climate change. “So, when as a Government, you are able to create policies and actions that protect the environment, we want to recognise and appreciate these initiatives,” she stated.
Speaking of her mission in Mauritius, Ms Leighton-Kone underlined that she had the chance to meet with various Ministers, and looked, as well, at the many opportunities regarding ecosystem restoration, clean-up of wetlands and peatlands, food, and food waste.
