Africa-Press – Mauritius. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Representative to Madagascar and Country Director for Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles, Mr Koffi Kouame, called on the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, this morning, at Newton Tower in Port Louis.
In a statement after the meeting, the UNPFA Representative highlighted that the UNFPA is the United Nations’ Agency that is responsible for reproductive health and rights as well as ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
Furthermore, he indicated that the UNFPA intends to achieve three transformative results, notably, eliminate: unmet needs for family planning; preventable maternal deaths; gender-based violence; and all harmful practices such as teenage pregnancy and child marriage, among others.
On this score, Mr Koffi Kouame underlined that discussions with Minister Ganoo focused on exploring avenues of cooperation to support Mauritius in advancing this development agenda.
He further pointed out that the UNFPA is working together with Statistics Mauritius so as to identify cases as per structure, age and sex, among others, to generate data in order to determine the types of actions required to address some of the key population issues such as ageing and lower fertility.
Mr Koffi Kouame is based in Madagascar and is currently on a one-week mission in Mauritius. He has over 20 years of experience as a development practitioner in population, reproductive health and gender.
