Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Anwar Husnoo, chaired a meeting to caution against parallel auction market activities, yesterday, in Port-Louis in presence of the Attorney-General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, and concerned authorities.
In a statement, Vice-Prime Minister Husnoo underlined that Government has constructed the National Wholesale Market (NWM) at Wooton with the main objective to ensure fair price determination mechanism, transparency, accountability, traceability and a market information system, and is operational since 28 July 2023.
He, nonetheless, pointed out that parallel wholesale sales have been notified to relevant authorities and warned against such activities adding that strict actions will be taken against those who continue to trade illegally.
Mr Husnoo called for the cooperation of all auctioneers of agricultural products and planters so as not to jeopardise the very purpose behind the setting up of the NWM.
He pointed out that the concerned authorities will make sure that no parallel sales are undertaken and that all existing auction sites will be closed so that all auctions of agricultural products are undertaken solely at the NWM.
