Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Anwar Husnoo, effected a site visit, on Friday 29 September 2023, at the New Market Fair and Mini Traffic Centre being constructed in Goodlands, to take stock of the works being done.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, and the Minister of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms, Dr Anjiv Ramdhany, were also present.

In a statement after the site visit, Vice-Prime Minister Husnoo highlighted that this Market Fair is a state-of-the-art construction to the tune of some Rs 300 million built on a surface of 11 acres.

The market, he indicated, comprises three blocks with a total of 480 vegetable stalls, 22 stalls for fish and meat sections, and 42 food and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) shops.

Moreover, to facilitate the daily commuting of the public to and from the Market Fair, the VPM announced a Traffic Centre for the District Council of Rivière du Rempart has been designed to cater for the 14 Bus Routes and will consist of 10 bus shelters and two toilet blocks.

Parking facilities will also be provided for 275 cars, 23 bus parking, and taxi stands as well, he added. The Government, Dr Husnoo underscored, is committed to developing the country’s infrastructural landscape, and added that several projects around Mauritius have been implemented or are in the pipeline.

These include: the construction of other Market Fairs in Chemin Grenier, Bel Air and; the restructuration of some sections of the Central Market of Port-Louis.

For his part, Minister Teeluck underlined that this Market Fair will be one of the biggest markets around the island. According to him, this fair is a gem in terms of facility that will be placed at the service of the public, especially the residents of Goodlands.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the village of Goodlands is experiencing a major impetus in terms of development, notably with social housing unit projects in two different areas of the region, and with the forthcoming construction of a Multipurpose Complex.

This, Mr Teeluck stressed, shows the Government’s willingness to invest massively in infrastructure and services to alleviate the daily lives of residents in various regions.

“Soon, contractors will be handing over the project, and from that point onwards, market vendors operating in the old Goodlands Market Fair will need to be shifted to the new site,” he added.

As for Dr Ramdhany, he outlined that in the construction of this new Market Fair, provision was made as regards safety measures, hygiene, food space, and restrooms.

“The infrastructure is well covered and cyclone resistant as well as user friendly for disabled persons,” he observed.

On this score, the Minister emphasised that this project is in line with the Government’s objective to ease the lives of the population and expressed confidence that the public will be satisfied with the services and amenities once the market is operational.
