The Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, effected a site visit, today, at the new headquarters of the District Council of Pamplemousses, in Calebasses. The aim of the visit was to take stock of the amenities put in place for employees of the Council to enable them to work in a conducive environment and be more effective in performing their duties.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, the Chairperson of the Pamplemousses District Council, Mr Kalicharan Somaroo, and other personalities were also present at the site visit.

In a statement, VPM Husnoo highlighted that in the past, both Pamplemousses and Rivière du Rempart district councils were in the same building until 2012. From there, Pamplemousses did not have a proper headquarters, as was the case for Flacq and Savanne. Works for the new headquarters of Pamplemousses District Council started in January 2019 and were completed in December 2020, he pointed out.

Furthermore, the VPM underlined that staff of the Pamplemousses District Council are currently in the process of moving in the new building. He stressed that Government aims at providing modern buildings to house each district council separately so that staff can provide a better service to the community. This, added Dr Husnoo, also aims at regrouping all departments of the council under the same roof.

For his part, Mr Somaroo underscored that since 26 July 2021, all departments of the Pamplemousses District Council are located under the same roof at Royal Road, Calebasses. This, he outlined, is an advantage for the public as they will not have to go to different places to benefit from required services. He further commended the Ministry of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management for having financed the project to the tune of Rs 70 million, adding that construction works for a workshop in the backyard is still ongoing.

Moreover, Mr Somaroo observed that there are 18 villages in Pamplemousses district which benefit from facilities offered by the new headquarters of the District Council.
