Africa-Press – Mauritius. Woolworths has announced the launch of its online shopping platform to shoppers in Mauritius, making it the first South African retailer to launch an online shopping platform in the country.
In a statement on Thursday, Woolworths said Mauritian shoppers will have access to over 30 000 of its fashion, beauty and homeware items. The retailer currently has six stores on the island, but the new service will be supported from its Bagatelle Mall store in the Moka district, which has a wider variety of products.
In December 2020, Woolworths also launched an on-demand click-and-collect food delivery service called Woolies Dash, which is still running on trial in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a surge in online shopping, as consumers were forced away from brick-and-mortar stores, which presented more health risks.
“We have used our learning and experience from our existing market-leading online operations to create an innovative e-commerce platform that is industry leading and scalable, and will ensure that shoppers can still enjoy the same quality in-store shopping experience online,” Mvula added.

“When browsing, online customers are able to create a wish list of items they love, do product comparisons, check the availability of the item they want to buy and can see related products,” Woolworths states.
“In addition to this, Woolworths WRewards members also enjoy the benefits offered under our loyalty programme on the platform.
“We are always looking for ways to make life easier for our customers, and we are excited to be able to introduce new services to enhance their shopping experience,” Woolworths divisional executive for Rest of Africa Yobe Mvula said in the statement.
The launch of the pilot service comes as Woolworths celebrates a decade of trading in the country. Customers will enjoy a free gift wrapping service and free deliveries for the month of September.
