Africa-Press – Mauritius. A working session was held, this morning, at the Garden Tower in Port Louis, with officers of the National Social Inclusion Foundation and delegates from the Zambian Parliamentary Committee on National Guidance and Gender Matters.

The 10-member Zambian delegation, led by the Chairperson of the Committee, Mr Harry Kamboni, is currently in Mauritius on a study visit to the Mauritius National Assembly.

The objectives of the visit are to learn about the best practices and share experience on the legal and policy framework governing women and girls with disabilities in Mauritius and the opportunities available to them; challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in various aspects of socio-economic life and their impact on the quality of life; and strategies put in place by the Government of Mauritius to enhance the welfare of women and girls with disabilities.

Programme of the visit
The programme started by a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Gender Caucus, Mr Sooroojdev Phokeer, on 02 May 2022, followed by a working session with members of the Parliamentary Gender Caucus.

The delegates were also briefed on the Mauritian Parliamentary System and on business continuity of the Parliament of Mauritius amid the COVID-19 pandemic during a guided tour to the Parliament Chamber.

The delegates also paid a courtesy call, on 04 May 2022, on the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Konjoo-Shah, which was followed by a working Session with the Acting Senior Chief Executive, Mr Khushiram Conhye, and other officers of the Ministry, officers of the National Women Entrepreneur Council, and officers of the National Women’s Council.

Moreover, the members of the Committee on National Guidance and Gender Matters also paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo.

The programme of the Zambian delegation also comprised an interaction with members of National Council for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons, and the Training and Employment of Disabled Persons Board.

The delegates will also undertake guided visits to the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site on 06 May 2022 and the Le Morne Cultural Heritage Landscape and Slave Route Monument on 07 may 2022.
