Africa-Press – Mauritius. A four-day Research Capacity Building Workshop, organised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and focussing on the role played by research in societal progress, was launched, this morning, at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis.
The Chairman of the HEC Board, Dr Abdess Salem Saumtally; the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Research and Planning and HEC Board Member, Dr Hemraz Boodhoo; the Commissioner of the HEC, Prof Romeela Mohee; and other personalities were present at the opening ceremony.
In his address, Dr Saumtally highlighted that the workshop was a gathering of distinguished researchers, academics and resource persons from the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, and the HEC.
“This,” he stated, “reflects a shared dedication to working together to effect positive societal change.
He pointed out that the G20 Report on education, released in June 2023, emphasised the increasingly crucial role of higher education at the nexus of education, research, and innovation.
“As such, the imperative to reconsider strategies for bolstering higher education research was proposed at the G20 Meeting,” he observed.
Dr Saumtally also encouraged all participants to actively exchange ideas and create networks so as to ensure future collaboration in order to guide the next generation of researchers and ensure progress in society.
As for Dr Boodhoo, he underlined that research at tertiary level played a pivotal role in shaping the future of individuals, communities, and nations.
“Mauritius,” he emphasised, “must thus become a learning nation, where creativity and innovation flourish at every level.
” He also affirmed that capacity building to do research at the tertiary level was of great significance, not only for the individuals seeking knowledge and skills in education, but also for society as a whole.
For her part, Prof Mohee affirmed that the workshop was a significant milestone in the HEC’s ongoing commitment to advance its research agenda. According to her, academic research played a crucial role and was pivotal for transforming Mauritius into a Regional Knowledge Hub.
It is noted that the Research Capacity Building Workshop aims to empower academics, MPhil/PhD students and researchers. By delving into key aspects of research grant writing and Result Based Management principles, the workshop seeks to enhance participants’ abilities to formulate proposals that generate tangible outcomes and impact across economic, environmental, social, and cultural spheres.
