World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly 2023: President Roopun hosts lunch in honour of the elderly

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, and the First Lady, Mrs Sayukta Roopun, hosted a lunch for members of the Senior Citizens Council, yesterday, to celebrate World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly at the State House in Réduit.

The Chairman of the Senior Citizens Council, Mr Hanslall Seebaruth, and some 23 members, namely two representatives from each district of Mauritius, were present on the occasion.

Addressing the elderly present, the President highlighted the importance of senior citizens in the community and added that they have, over the years, greatly contributed to positioning the country on the pathway of progress while preserving peace, social harmony, and values in an evolving society.

Moreover, Mr Roopun underlined that families have the important role of inculcating core values such as respect, love, honesty, peace, and non-violence to their members from an early stage. The stronger the family, the stronger society becomes, he added.

For his part, Mr Seebaruth seized this opportunity to thank the President for having invited the elderly adding that it is the first time that such an initiative has been taken in their honour.

Moreover, he highlighted that following this event, the Senior Citizens Council will also start to celebrate this special day through their activities in different branches of the island.

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly In 2021, His Holiness Pope Francis declared World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, to take place annually on the fourth Sunday of July.

Pope Francis instituted this Day since he believes that grandparents are often forgotten even though they are the link between generations, passing on the experience of life and faith to the young.

This year’s theme is “His mercy is from age to age” (Lk 1:50). The Church observes this Day each year on the fourth Sunday in July, close to the feast of Jesus’ grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne.
