Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Mobile Post Office was launched, today at Bassin Road in Quatre Bornes, in the context of World Post Office Day 2023. The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Mr Alan Ganoo, the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin; the Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPS), Mr Nand Prakash Ramchurrun, Mrs Sandra Mayotte and Ms Tania Diolle, and other eminent personalities were also present.
This new service will operate from 13h00 to 14h15 from Monday to Friday and will provide all the services that a Post Office offers namely payment of CEB and CWA bills, purchase of stamps, posting of letters and parcels, purchase of Metro cards, and payment of pension, among others.
The Mobile Post Office will service the inhabitants of Bassin, Kennedy and Palma. In his address, Minister Ganoo lauded the collaboration between the Municipality of Quatre Bornes and the Mauritius Post Ltd which has facilitated the operation of the Mobile Post Office at Bassin Road.
He recalled that the inhabitants of the region had to travel to the main post office in Quatre Bornes which is always busy and where the waiting queue is very long as it caters to all the regions in Quatre Bornes.
He highlighted that all the services provided by the Post Office will be offered by the Mobile Post Office. Minister Ganoo further reaffirmed Government’s commitment to bring development in the country and to boost the country’s economy.
To that end, he highlighted the numerous projects being undertaken in several sectors namely healthcare, transport and sports facilities, amongst others.
For his part, Minister Balgobin stated that this new service will relieve the plight of the inhabitants of the region of Bassin Road who will have the services of a post office at their doorstep. He recalled that this Mobile Post Office was first introduced in 1973 for the inhabitants of Mahebourg.
Speaking about World Post Day, he said that the purpose of Day is to bring awareness to the Post’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.
He also pointed out that last year, the Mauritius Post Ltd celebrated its 250 years of existence in Mauritius. As for the PPS Mayotte, Ramchurrun and Diolle, they all commended Government’s initiative of introducing a Mobile Post Office in the region of Bassin Road in Quatre Bornes.
They highlighted that other Post Offices around Mauritius will be renovated namely at Flic en Flac and Bambous. They also spoke about the renovation of the Case Noyale Post Office and underlined that a site visit was effected today to take stock of the renovation works that need to be undertaken.
World Post Day 2023 This day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) which was started in 1874 in Switzerland.
It is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of postal services in facilitating communication, commerce, and connectivity between people and businesses across the globe.
The UPU, a specialised agency of the United Nations that coordinates international postal services, plays a significant role in promoting and organising World Post Day.
The theme of World Post Day for this year 2023 is “Together for trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future”. Post offices play a crucial role in fostering cohesive, inclusive, connected communities.
Presently, over five million postal employees are entrusted with a variety of essential and personal items, from messages, gifts, and goods, to money and medicines.
