World Standards Day 2022: Seminar organised to raise awareness on standardisation

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB), organised a half-day seminar, today, in Moka to mark World Standards Day. This initiative aimed to raise awareness and increase understanding of how international standards contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Celebrated annually on 14 October, the theme for this year is “Shared vision for a better world”. The General Manager of the MSB, Mrs Sandhya Boygah, the Deputy Director of the MSB, Mr Yusuf Foondun, and other personalities were present.

In her address, Mrs Boygah stated that World Standards Day is a tribute to the collaborative efforts of thousands of volunteers who participate in standardisation activities.

International standards such as International Organization for Standardization, International Electrotechnical Commission, and the International Telecommunications Union are the pioneers in developing standards, she pointed out.

The world, she underlined, is facing an urgent challenge to build back better as a result of the effects of the COVID-19. The pandemic, she added, revealed the absolute necessity of addressing the SDGs in an inclusive way so as to strengthen societies, and make them more resilient and more equitable.

Last year, she recalled, marked the start of a multi-year campaign to increase understanding of how international standards contribute to achieve the SDGs. The objective is to recognise how international standards form an integral part of the success of the SDGs by 2030, she indicated.

Mrs Boygah further highlighted that international standards are powerful tools for helping organisations capitalise their potential in the global marketplace while conserving environmental resources.

Standards, she emphasised, are huge contributors which help organisations to meet their set of objectives in line with the SDGs and are used as a means to show compliance and as a base for market and consumer friendly regulations.

They also contribute to reduce technical barriers to trade and minimise transaction costs, she added. The MSB General Manager called for the cooperation of public and private partners, stakeholders and the use of all available tools including international standards and conformity assessment to meet the targets of the SDGs.
