Africa-Press – Mauritius. Young innovators from ten African countries will serve or assist, for a period of 12 months, in various departments of the African Union Commission and other bodies of this continental organization.
The inclusion of the 19 young people, whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed, is part of a process of mobilisation and integration of the 2nd cohort of the African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship.
The Digital Fellowship promotes youth participation in governance, while leveraging technological innovations to address governance and development challenges in Africa, thus contributing to the implementation of Agenda 2063 and the 1 Million for the Next Level Initiative.
Implemented by the Women, Gender and Youth Directorate of the African Union Commission, in partnership with the GIZ Office at the African Union and Afrilabs, the Digital and Innovation Fellowship Programme is a robust project that identifies and mobilises highly skilled technological innovators to work in units and other bodies of this continental organisation as “fellows in residence”.
Fellows identify data management challenges in their host unit’s systems and address them by co-creating and building innovative and sustainable tailored products and processes. The solutions proposed by Fellows have proven to improve data management processes and the overall work of the AU.
A highlight of the AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship is the capacity building and team building workshop, which provided Fellows with a solid foundation for impactful contributions to the African Union Management Information Systems landscape. Held at the African Union headquarters, the workshop also provided an opportunity for relationship building and peer learning.
The AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship Programme builds on the African Union’s support for the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa, which aims to leverage digital technologies to promote integration, economic growth, job creation and poverty eradication.
The second cohort of the AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship follows the establishment of the AU Innovation Lab, a convergent platform for multi-stakeholder input into Africa’s innovation landscape.
