Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s national swimming team needs three million meticais (approximately US$46,953 at current exchange rates) to take part in the 2026 African Swimming Championships in Algeria, with most of the amount allocated to travel costs, the president of the Mozambican Swimming Federation said on Tuesday.
“To make our athletes’ participation in this African championship possible, we need three million meticais. This amount will cover transport expenses, which are the highest, including travel from Mozambique to Algeria, while some swimmers will travel from Portugal to Algeria,” said the president of the Mozambican Swimming Federation (FMN), Justino Francisco, quoted by state-run TVM.
The official admitted that the federation currently does not have the funds required for the event, which will enable Mozambique to participate in the 17th African Swimming Championships, scheduled to take place from 5 to 10 May in Oran, in north-eastern Algeria, in an event organised by Africa Aquatics.
“We have even had to ask, reluctantly, for support from parents to see if they can contribute. We are waiting for possible responses, but the truth is that, at this moment, we do not have the funds for the team’s participation in Algeria,” concluded Justino Francisco.
