Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government, through its Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office (GMNK), on Monday launched an international tender for the selection of a strategic partner for the construction of this energy generation undertaking.
The selection of the investor will be announced next year, and carried out based on the criteria of technical capacity, financial strength and international experience in the development of hydroelectric project, a source from the GMNK said.
The launch of this competition follows the first virtual conference with potential strategic and financial investors held last September.
Entitled “Potential Investors Market Survey”, the event served to alert the international market and was attended by 155 participants, including 35 companies internationally renowned in the area of electricity generation and transport from various countries on all continents, as well as 12 commercial banks and bilateral and multilateral financial agencies.
A GMNK source described the conference as important to ensuring that the process of selecting a strategic and financial partner was attractive, competitive and participatory, given the scale of the required investment (in the order of US$5 billion) and the project’s legal and financial complexity.
The event was attended by the Southern Africa Power Pool, the regional energy entity of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The GMNK was created by the Mozambican government in 2019 in order to coordinate the implementation of the project.
Incorporating a run-of-river dam, the project will be located on the Zambezi River in Tete province, 61 kilometres from Cahora Bassa, with an installed energy production capacity of not less than 1,300 megawatts, 760 of which will be ‘firm’ capacity.
