Young man says plainclothes UIR agent shot him in Pemba

Africa-Press – Mozambique. An agent of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) is accused of shooting a young man in the city of Pemba, for reasons yet to be established.

The victim survived and is no longer at risk, according to the director of Pemba Provincial Hospital, where the patient is receiving medical care.

“My sister-in-law left the room, knocked at the door and asked me to open the gate so that my older brother could enter. When I opened the gate, two young men appeared, in civilian clothes. I don’t know where they came from. Suddenly, they started shooting without any cause. At the time, I cried for help and, when they saw that I was in bad shape, they ran away. My brother screamed for help and ran after them,” victim Calton Rafael explained.

“They managed to catch one of them at the barracks. The other one who fired the shots was not found. When it happened, three more came wearing shorts and armed. This was when they were transporting me to the hospital.”

The bullet, supposedly fired by a UIR agent, grazed the 26-year-old man’s right rib before lodging in his arm. He has been hospitalised at the Pemba Provincial Hospital in Cabo Delgado since the early hours of last Saturday.

“He has an open fracture in his arm from the gunshot wound. He has a wound on his chest wall. At the moment, he is stable, and out of danger,” hospital director António Carvalho detailed.

This is the third shooting of civilians reportedly carried out by agents of law and order in Pemba in one year. One victim died.
