Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Matola Municipal Council on Wednesday issued a ten-day ultimatum for the owners of commercial establishments and private residences selling alcoholic beverages in the vicinity of schools to cease any such activity.
The measure arises because there is growing drug consumption and consumption of alcohol in the vicinity of educational establishments, contributing to cases of violence in schools.
The Councillor for Health in the Municipal Council of Matola, explains that selling alcoholic beverages in the surroundings of teaching and learning places is against the law,
“While respecting the exercise of economic activity and there being a need to ensure compliance with the provisions of decree nº 54/2013, of 7 October, chapter II, in its article 5, nº 1, e), it is hereby communicated to all citizens of the city of Matola, owners of commercial establishments or residences in the vicinity of schools and who are practising the sale of alcoholic beverages so that within 10 days they abandon the exercise of this activity. After the deadline, the Municipal Council of the City of Matola will carry out a campaign to dismantle and deactivate all their hiding places and consequent criminal liability,” the Municipal Council communique reads.
“The Municipal Council of the City of Matola is concerned about the level of growth in drug and alcohol consumption in the vicinity of schools in the city and, aware that drugs and alcohol are social evils that destroy the youth of our municipality, invites all stakeholders so help face and eradicate these evils, in order to protect future generations,” the note adds.
The Matola city council called for “the collaboration of all citizens and guardians in reporting and monitoring” instances of substance abuse by minors.
