Africa-Press – Mozambique. Vodacom Mozambique held recently, in Maputo, the launch of its 5G Network, a technology that will revolutionise the Mozambican market, in a year in which the mobile phone operator celebrates twenty (20) years of operations in Mozambique.

The event was attended by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Communications of Mozambique (INCM), Tuaha Mote; as well as Vodacom partners, suppliers and customers, who were able to witness the launch of 5G Technology in Mozambique.

The 5G Network is actually part of Vodacom’s strategy that is aimed, among others, continually expanding network coverage to new rural areas, promoting better network and fibre availability, providing state of the art technology, as well transforming the Vodacom network’s architecture following the strategy adopted by Vodafone (Tech 2025).

Nuno Quelhas, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vodacom, said: “The launch of 5G is a historic milestone for Vodacom Mozambique, because, in addition to being the first operator to inaugurate this technology in the country, from here on, we have the possibility of increasing the potential of the current 4G network, taking mobile broadband to very high standards of connection speed and simultaneous users. 5G will increase the opportunities for value creation because of its ability to provide wider network coverage, reliable network connections and faster data transfer. And, in combination with other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), IoT and 3D printing, it will drive innovation projects and deliver revolutionary business solutions. The increase in the number of connected phones per area will enable the expansion of the global trend of the ‘Internet of Things’, which Vodacom has already implemented, increasing the opportunities for more and more smart and connected spaces, such as homes, streets, hospitals, commerce and industries.”

Mateus Magala, Minister of Transport and Communications, said during the event that “The Transport and Communications Sector defined connectivity as one of the five priorities of the Sector’s current governance. The launch of Vodacom’s 5G Technology materializes our vision embodied in the Government’s Five-Year Programme, which advocates the introduction of this technology in all provincial capitals by 2024.”

On the occasion, Vodacom promoted live demonstrations of the use of 5G Technology, namely, high definition video streaming, high speed film downloads and augmented virtual experiences.

In this first phase, Customers with Huawei, Xiaomi and iPhone phones that support 5G will be able to access the benefits of this technology. With a compatible device, the customer must have the latest version of the operating system updated, with the 5G option active in their network settings and be within a 5G coverage area. Currently, this technology is being tested on more devices, such as Samsung, and is expected to be available soon.

At this moment, in Maputo, there are Vodacom 5G antennas in the following locations: Vodacom’s headquarters, the Presidency, Radisson Blue Hotel, Língamo and at Maputo International Airport. In addition to the country’s capital, there is 5G coverage in the city of Matola; in the central area of the city of Nampula; in downtown Nacala; in the Munhava, Maquinino and Chipanga neighbourhoods, in the city of Beira; as well as in the city of Tete.
