Mozambique: PGR warns of disorderly construction in Maputo endangering the environment

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Attorney General of Mozambique (PGR), Beatriz Buchili, on Wednesday warned in a speech at the inauguration of magistrates about disorderly construction and construction in inappropriate areas in Maputo, the country’s capital, with serious consequences for the environment.

“We continue to see in our city of Maputo situations of disorderly construction in inappropriate areas, such as dunes and mangroves, with disregard for the law, with emphasis on environmental impact standards and urbanisation plans,” Beatriz Buchili said while addressing the new Chief Prosecutor of the City of Maputo, Natércia Dias, who took office on Wednesday.

“All along Maputo’s coastal areas, we see the construction of residences in the mangrove area, including mansions for those who want a privileged view, and even small improvised homes, despite signs from the Maputo City municipality that classify the area as ‘protected zone’,” she commented.

For Beatriz Buchilli, construction in inappropriate areas puts the environment and citizens at risk, in addition to “compromising the future of generations to come”.

Mozambique loses at least 88 hectares of mangroves annually, according to the latest data from the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, which highlights urban expansion, the construction of salt pans, forestry exploitation and the unsustainable use of trees as among the causes.

New magistrate Natércia Dias promised that the Public Prosecutor’s Office would redouble its efforts to respond to disorderly construction in Maputo, noting that the defence of the environment was one of the organisation’s priority concerns.

“This is one of the areas of intervention of the Public Prosecutor, in defence of collective and diffuse rights, which will certainly be one of the priority areas in our interventions,” the new Chief Public Prosecutor of the City of Maputo said.

Also during Wednesday’s ceremony, Januário Malalane was sworn in as advisor to the Attorney General of the Republic.
