Parliament rejects creation of commission of inquiry into post-election violence; MDM criticises Frelimo

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican parliament on Wednesday (15-11) rejected an MDM proposal to create a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of murder during the local elections.

The spokesperson for the parliamentary group of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) in the Assembly of the Republic, Fernando Bismarque, explains that the objective of the proposal was to “respond to the popular outcry” following the challenge to the results of the local elections on 11 October.

After the voting process, “there was a brutal police action that resulted in the death of fellow citizens”, Bismarque has said to DW Africa.

“There was a death in Chiúre, in the province of Cabo Delgado, and in Nampula, but there was also a deputy of the Assembly of the Republic from the Frelimo parliamentary group who trampled on MDM campaign material in Homoíne district, in Inhambane province,” he elaborated.

The proposal was rejected by the majority vote of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo)

Bismarque says Frelimo is responsible for the alleged police brutality and maintains that the creation of the commission would have revealed the truth about the corporation’s actions.

It is part of an expedient to subvert the popular will expressed at the polls, and is also an attempt to return to the single party system.”

The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) parliamentary bench, which has not participated in the sessions of the Assembly of the Republic since the October elections, considers it essential to establish the truth and hold those involved in the post-election violence accountable.

Renamo parliamentary spokesman Arnaldo Chalaua described the alleged use of police force to repress citizens, commenting: “Mozambique is a country where rulers are starting to attack the citizens.”

“They are afraid of the citizens, because they actually carried out a shameful fraud in the local elections. People were killed in Chiúre, Quelimane, Maputo and a little across this country. In
