
Africa-Press – Mozambique. The High Court of Gauteng, in Johannesburg, today postponed to Friday, 27 August, the hearing of the Forum for Budget Monitoring (FMO) challenge to the extradition of the ex-Mozambique Finance Minister Manuel Chang to his country.
“The matter will be heard at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021”, readss the court order to which Lusa had access.
High Court Judge Edwin Molahlehi has just ordered that Manuel Chang may not be returned to Mozambique until the High Court has decided on FMO’s urgent application opposing Justice Minister Lamola’s decision to extradite him
South Africa’s Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services “has made a commitment that the first defendant [Manuel Chang] will not be extradited to the Republic of Mozambique until ruling on Part A [of the FMO application] is handed,” reads the court document.
At issue is the decision announced on Monday to Lusa by the spokesman of the South African Ministry of Justice, Chrispin Phiri, reporting that South Africa has decided to extradite to Mozambique former finance minister Manuel Chang, detained in South Africa in 2018, at the request of the United States of America.
