Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Angolan ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, José Bamoquina Zau, assumed, on Thursday, the presidency of the SADC Group to coordinate all diplomatic action by Southern African countries in that country.

José Bamoquina Zau and the outgoing president of the SADC Group, DRC ambassador Pascaline Gerengbo Yakivu, were received yesterday by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who was introduced as the new acting leader.

During the hearing, minister Yusuf Tuggar and the group of ambassadors defended the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the ECOWAS and SADC regions, with a focus on updating the main legal instruments.

Tuggar considered diplomatic relations with Angola “excellent on a bilateral basis”, as well as in the coordination of common actions and strategies within the framework of the Gulf of Guinea Commission.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Nigeria, Angola, DRC, South Africa and Tanzania are important actors and drivers of development in Sub-Saharan Africa, an advantageous condition for maintaining permanent coordination.

Yusuf Tuggar was concerned about coups d’état and unconstitutional changes of Governments in West Africa, defending concerted actions between the ECOWAS and SADC regions to consolidate democracy and good governance.

Angola and Nigeria played a historic and preponderant role in the struggle to overthrow the segregationist apartheid regime in South Africa and for the pacification of Southern Africa.
