Africa-Press – Mozambique. As part of the economic recovery measures adopted by the government, all time restrictions on commercial activity are to be lifted. The decision, announced by the Ministry of Economy, is part of a broader plan to revitalize the economy, with a special focus on stimulating the commercial and services sector.
According to a note issued by the Ministry of Economy to which ‘Notícias’ had access, the measure give economic agents autonomy to decide the opening hours of their establishments.
The ministry however emphasizes the obligation to comply with the general working hours regime as well as other legal provisions applicable to sectors with specific regimes. It also emphasizes that the flexibility introduced seeks to respond to market dynamics, and should not serve to harm workers’ rights.
In this context, the effective implementation of the measure requires that economic operators formally communicate the chosen opening hours to the National Directorate of Internal Trade, indicating the intended periods of activity, which will allow for better organisation and monitoring of the sector.
The executive underlines that this action is part of a set of initiatives aimed at boosting economic recovery in the post-crisis period, promoting greater flexibility and efficiency in the business environment.
In Mozambique, there is no single, specific legislation that exclusively regulates the opening hours of commerce in general. However, the exercise of this activity is subject to several legal and administrative instruments, which vary according to the nature of the activity, the location and the type of establishments.
The main piece of legislation is Law No. 1/2007 of 7 February – the Commercial Activities Law – which defines the guiding principles for the exercise of commercial activities in the country.
