Africa-Press – Mozambique. A delegation of businesspeople from the Chinese city of Guangzhou visited Beira in Sofala province this week, with the aim of identifying areas of potential cooperation in sectors such as trade, logistics and urban infrastructure.

The visit comes at a time when the municipality, led by Albano Carige, is trying to reinvent itself as a regional logistics platform, taking advantage of its strategic location on the corridor that connects Mozambique to Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.

According to an article in the newspaper Txopela, the city of Beira, although rich in potential, continues to be beset by old problems that threaten to compromise any long-term ambitions. For many economic operators, the condition of the infrastructure is an Achilles heel. The Port of Beira, the centrepiece of the logistics scheme, is facing chronic silting that requires regular dredging, without which it becomes impossible to receive deep-draft vessels.

The deterioration of the road and rail network increases transport costs and undermines the corridor’s competitiveness. This situation, together with a business environment that is still bureaucratic and not transparent, raises doubts about the municipality’s real capacity to attract and retain major investments.

Even so, for the municipality, modernising infrastructure, strengthening legal certainty and investing in technological innovation will be decisive for Beira to consolidate itself as a leading logistics hub in the southern region.
