Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Central Asset Recovery Office in Mozambique seized assets and goods valued at around 4.4 billion meticais (€61 million) in 2024, compared to 1.3 billion meticais (€17 million) in the previous year.
The Attorney General of Mozambique, Américo Letela, revealed the figures in parliament yesterday, detailing that, of the total assets seized, 34 comprised real estate, valued at just over 4.2 billion meticais (almost €60 million) and 183 were vehicles, valued at just over 134 million meticais (almost €2 million).
“We stress the need to approve a civil confiscation law as an additional means of combating organized and transnational crime, taking away from criminals the proceeds of their illicit activity,” Américo Letela requested while presenting the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s (PGR) annual activity report.
In June, 2024, the PGR indicated that, in the last 10 years alone, Mozambique had recovered almost three billion meticais (€43 million) in 11,000 cases against corruption, terrorist financing and money laundering.
In the same period, the PGR acknowledged that the perpetrators of such crimes are “improving their methods” and called for training and specialization of magistrates and investigators in order to improve the efficiency of their actions.
“The sophistication of the means used by economic and financial crime and corruption and the social damage it causes (…) demand not only resources from the investigating authorities, but also the use of methods and the specialization of their agents, which is why we highlight the importance of continuing and deepening the specific training of investigating magistrates,” Letela said.
