Government Foresees Deficit of 126.8 Billion Meticais this Year

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government is envisaging a deficit of 126.8 billion meticais (about 1.9 billion dollars at the current exchange rate) in the General State Budget (OE) for 2025.

The Government’s Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for 2025 states that the total State Budget (OE) for 2025 is estimated at around 512.7 billion meticais.

According to government spokesperson and Minister of State Administration Inocencio Impissa, speaking to reporters on Tuesday in Maputo after a meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), the main macroeconomic policy assumptions underlying the 2025 PESOE include a 2.9 per cent growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Impissa declared that PESOE forecasts total state revenue for the year of almost 386 billion meticais.

“PESOE is structured around five pillars”, he said, “namely, Pillar One: national unity, peace, security and governance; Pillar Two: structural transformation of the economy; Pillar Three: social and demographic transformation; Pillar Four: infrastructure, organization and spatial planning; and Pillar Five: environmental sustainability and climate change”.

“In order to make investments in priority sectors viable and to guarantee fiscal sustainability, the government will maintain its commitment to fiscal consolidation, with the aim of ensuring the correction of the structural deficit in the State Budget and the stabilization of public debt”, he promised.

At the same meeting the Council of Ministers discussed the annual public debt report. Impissa said that the stock of public debt and its guarantees rose to around 1.1 trillion meticais, “which corresponds to 76.9 percent of GDP.”
