Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday announced that a further seven cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease have been diagnosed, bringing the total number of cases identified in the country to 151,260.

According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, six of the new cases are men and one is a woman. Three of the cases were from the northern province of Cabo Delgado, with one each from Maputo city, Nampula, Tete and Inhambane, No positive cases were reported from any of the other six provinces.

Since the start of the pandemic, 938,672 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,295 of them in the previous 24 hours. 1,288 of these tests yielded negative results, while seven people tested positive for the virus.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Thursday was 0.5 per cent. The rates for the past week are as follows (on only one day, last Saturday, did the rate go above two per cent):

Friday, 22 October 1.3 per cent

Saturday, 23 October 2.1 per cent

Sunday, 24 October 0.6 per cent

Monday, 25 October 0.17 per cent

Tuesday, 26 October 1.7 per cent

Wednesday, 27 October 0.9 per cent

Thursday, 28 October 0.5 per cent.

Over the same 24 hour period, one Covid-19 patient was discharged from hospital (in Tete), and one new case was admitted (in Maputo).

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities remained eight, the same as on Wednesday and Tuesday. Five of these patients were in Maputo, and there was one each in Niassa, Nampula and Zambezia. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in the other seven provinces.

The Ministry release reported no further deaths on Thursday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 1,929.

Over the previous 24 hours, 183 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 (179 in Nampula and four in Maputo province). The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,192, or 98.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 326 on Wednesday to 145 on Thursday. Not a single province had as many as 100 cases, and in most the number of cases was down to single figures. The geographical distribution was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 72; Maputo city, 24; Niassa, 12; Zambezia, 11; Manica, six; Inhambane, 5; Nampula, four; Gaza, four; Maputo province, four; Sofala, two; and Tete, one.

The Ministry also reported that 199,595 people received their first dose of vaccine against Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours. 2,099,562 people are now fully vaccinated, and 2.939,707 have received at least one dose.
