Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) yesterday expressed concern about the wave of violent crimes against women in two districts of Sofala province, with nine deaths recorded since January.
“It is worrying,” said the commander of the PRM in Sofala, Ernesto Madungue, suggesting that it would be helpful for “academics” to carry out a “study” of the recurrent crimes.
Speaking to journalists in Beira city during the week in which the PRM’s anniversary is celebrated, Madungue identified more than 200 instances of femicide throughout the central province in four years, including young, adult and even elderly women.
Ernesto Madungue explained that nine women had been murdered this year in Beira and Dondo districts alone, against 18 in 2024 and 25 in 2023. The latest case involved a 15-year-old girl, a resident of Beira city, whose body was found on the road near her home on Friday exhibiting “clear signs” of sexual abuse.
The PRM commander in Sofala said that this type of crime against women had been occurring in communities further away from the major cities.
“We have been doing some work, but we are realizing that it requires us to find other strategies to resolve cases of this kind. We would like to appeal to our population to be more vigilant, in order to keep the police informed about everything that is happening in the neighbourhoods and other areas,” he added.
