Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least six suspected terrorists were killed in clashes with government forces in Muidumbe, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, a source on the ground told Lusa on Wednesday.

According to the source, the clash occurred last Sunday in Miangalewa, Muidumbe district, after Mozambican soldiers noticed a possible attack on their position: “We were eating and then we noticed some strange movements. That’s when we realised the rebels planned to attack one of our positions.”

From Muidumbe, the source added that the clash, which took place during the day, also left several attackers wounded.

The town of Miangalewa, in Muidumbe, borders the district of Macomia across the Messalo River, along the EN380 national road, one of the few paved roads in the northern region.

Since October 2017, the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the Islamic State extremist group.

The latest major attack took place on 10 and 11 May 2024, on the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan military personnel supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.

In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks by Islamic extremist groups in northern Mozambique, an increase of 36% over the previous year, according to a study released by the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), an academic institution of the US Department of Defence.
