District Permanent Secretary questioned for embezzlement

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane has opened criminal proceedings against the Permanent Secretary of Funhalouro district, Manuel Pomule, for alleged involvement in the embezzlement of around three million meticais (46,600 dollars at the current exchange rate) from state coffers.

According to the PGR, the case dates back to the period between 2019 and 2022, when Pomule was serving as Permanent Secretary of Panda district, when he allegedly forged travel guides in order to receive daily allowances, diverted fuel and led other fraudulent schemes “with the support of civil servants and private sector agents.”

As a result of the proceedings, the Inhambane Provincial Law Court has started to question Pomule and other defendants, also accused of active participation in the embezzlement scheme. The crimes they are accused of include criminal conspiracy, the forgery of documents and money laundering.

The PGR is demanding forfeiture to the state of all the assets acquired illegally by the defendants during the period of the embezzlement scheme. The assets in question include luxury cars and houses.
