Africa-Press – Mozambique. A group of militiamen in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, killed two people suspected of belonging to insurgent groups in Macomia district, local sources told Lusa on Friday.
Armed citizens patrolling the area shot the two suspects on Wednesday in the community of Nagulue, a remote area in the bush, 50 kilometres from the district headquarters.
On this occasion, they seized two axes and two blood-stained machetes from them.
The weapons are suspected of having been used in some of the recent attacks that victimised civilians in the southern part of Cabo Delgado province, where rebels have fled the military operation against the armed insurgency that has hit the province since 2017.
The two suspects lived in Macomia, where they suspiciously disappeared after the first invasion of the village by extremist groups in May 2020.
Reports of their presence in the Nagulue area emerged about a fortnight ago, near wells where peasants draw water.
Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised for four years by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The conflict has led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.
Since July, an offensive by government troops with support from Rwanda, which was later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), allowed for an increase in security, recovering several areas where there was rebel presence, including the town of MocĂmboa da Praia, which had been occupied since August 2020.
