Africa-Press – Mozambique. The National Conference of the OJM (Mozambican Youth Organisation), the youth wing of the ruling Frelimo Party, on Saturday elected Constantino Andre its new General Secretary.

Andre won 161 votes (91 per cent of the delegates present). His only opponent, Samson Chongo, won just ten votes.

There had been a third candidate, Baera Moreira, but the Frelimo Political Commission ruled that he was ineligible, because he had been a member of the OJM for less than ten years. AIM found that Moreira had been in the OJM for nine years and five months, not enough to meet that statutory requirements for candidates.

The 31 year old Andre is also a member of the Frelimo Central Committee. He replaces Silva Livone, who has been appointed Secretary of State for Niassa province.

Speaking immediately after his election, Andre promised to focus on “unity and internal cohesion”, and on dealing with the main issues concerning young Mozambicans, such as unemployment and the shortage of decent housing.

Responding to the appeal made by President Daniel Chapo at the start of the Conference, Andre promised that the OJM will be actively involved in the struggle for economic independence. “Our contribution shall be relevant”, he pledged, “because we shall bring together all sectors of society to discuss and find platforms for making advances”.
