Africa-Press – Mozambique. The General Command of the Mozambican Police (PRM) has condemned “the disproportionate and unnecessary actions of four officers”, who were responsible for shooting dead a twelve-year-old child, Feniasse Jemusse Muchanguera, while he was traveling in a minibus from Maputo towards the central province of Manica.
The tragedy took place on Monday morning in Bobole region, Marracuene district, along the country’s main north-south highway (N1), about 30 kilometres north of Maputo city.
As a result of the shooting, after unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle in which the minor was traveling in the company of his parents, a police officer thought to be responsible for the shooting was caught, beaten and then set on fire by a group of a group of enraged local residents.
Protesting against the police murder of the child, members of the public also blocked the highway for several hours.
According to a statement from the General Command, “the other three officers who escaped the public lynching are in police custody, awaiting disciplinary proceedings which will lead to their dismissal, while parallel investigations are underway to establish their criminal responsibility.”
The Police have also called for calm. The statement declared “because we do not condone abuses of power, those responsible will be investigated so that incidents like this do not happen again.”
