Africa-Press – Mozambique. The German political party Die Linke (“the Left”) met on Thursday in Berlin with Mozambique’s former presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, as he continued his European tour.
The meeting was surprising since Mondlane’s European contacts have mostly been on the right or far-right, including the outright fascist “Chega!” party of Portugal. But Die Linke is the heir of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) which was once the ruling party in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
On his Facebook page, Mondlane skated over the communist past of Die Linke. He described Die Linke as “the heir to the historic struggles for social justice in the re-united Germany”.
He said his meeting with Die Linke dealt with “serious violations of human rights” in Mozambique. The “Die Linke” leadership, Mondlane continued, “expressed deep concern and pledged that it would use all the means at its disposal to amplify the voice of the Mozambican people and support the efforts for freedom and true democracy”.
Mondlane was also received by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which is affiliated to the Christian Democratic Union, part of the German governing coalition.
