Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action on Monday launched a national awareness campaign on the risks of irregular labour migration. The campaign begins this Tuesday (26-08) and runs until the end of the year.
The information was released by Alice Brito, the ministry director of Migratory Labour, at a press conference in Maputo.
According to Brito, the initiative follows the increase in cases of promises of employment abroad made outside of legal channels, placing Mozambican citizens in a vulnerable position.
“Deciding to migrate is a good idea, but this migration must follow established channels. Otherwise, workers may face risks such as exploitation, lack of social protection, labour abuse, and even criminal networks,” Alice Brito warned.
As part of the review of the regulations approved by Decree 16/2025, the government determined that overseas employment brokerage will now be limited to duly licensed private agencies.
Currently, only six agencies meet the requirements to recruit and place Mozambican workers outside the country, and they must hold a special license and cooperation agreements with entities in the destination country.
The campaign will also raise awareness among job seekers, who should ensure that any job offer is formalized in writing, containing clear working conditions and remuneration, and must be approved by the appropriate authority.
Brito also clarified that charging candidates for recruitment services is not permitted and warned that this practice is considered illegal.
Regarding recent cases of labour exploitation of Mozambicans abroad, Brito confirmed that the government is working in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the repatriation of citizens at risk, including those currently in Laos.
The campaign starting today will be conducted through digital platforms, social media, radio, television and community outreach, with a focus on young people, who are considered more susceptible to false promises of employment.
