Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least one person died and 18 were injured following an accident involving the Vilankulo Football Sports Association (ADV) team bus in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, following a Moçambola match.

The traffic accident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Chissibuca region of Zavala district and “resulted in serious and minor injuries, and the death of the head of the Vilankulo AD Football Department”, reads a statement from the Mozambican Football League, which organizes the country’s top football championship.

According to the organization, the bus was carrying players, coaching staff and other club employees, and was returning to Vilankulo after a 1-0 victory over Desportivo de Nacala in Nampula province, a match counting towards the 2025 Moçambola Championship [national championship] .

Stélio Muchanga, the medical director of Quissico District Hospital, where the 18 injured in the accident were taken, said that 12 persons suffered minor injuries. All received outpatient treatment and are currently out of danger.

According to Muchanga, the six victims in serious condition were transferred to Inhambane Provincial Hospital, “at the request of their families”.

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo expressed his deepest sorrow and consternation in a statement, extending “his deepest condolences to the grieving family of the leader who lost his life in this misfortune, as well as to the club’s management, the players, and all ADV fans”.

“May they find solace in national solidarity and may the memory of the deceased remain alive as a symbol of dedication and passion for sport […]. We are with you. The nation stands in solidarity with the Vilankulo sporting family and reaffirms its commitment to valuing life and safety on our country’s roads,” concluded the head of state, once again warning of the need to reduce the country’s road accident tally.
