Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Maputo City Court ordered the release of the financial advisor of Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane, who had been in pre-trial detention since March, the former presidential candidate told Lusa on Friday, considering it to be a “political process”.
“This confirms what we’ve always said, that it was a political process, because now the Public Prosecutor’s Office is exonerating her of the crimes she was accused of,” said Venâncio Mondlane, speaking to Lusa.
According to Mondlane, Glória Nobre Chire, who was arrested on 13 March 2025 at her home in Maputo, was released after a court hearing on Thursday, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office exonerating her of the crimes she was suspected of, such as attempting to violently alter the rule of law, criminal association and conspiracy to commit crimes against state security.
The former presidential candidate also said that the confirmation of the non-prosecution of these crimes, as now requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, will be made in a court session scheduled for 15 September, and that she will only be awaiting the session with an Identity and Residence Certificate.
Glória Monteiro Nobre Chire, 59, a retired accountant, was, until her arrest, responsible for the finances of Venâncio Mondlane, the former presidential candidate who led the biggest challenge to the election results that Mozambique has seen since the first multi-party elections in 1994.
In July, the politician, who was sworn in as State Counsellor this week, was charged by the Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office with five offences in connection with the post-election demonstrations, including incitement to collective disobedience and instigation of terrorism.
Mondlane revealed at the time that he is accused of committing a crime of public apology for a crime, a crime of incitement to collective disobedience, a crime of public incitement to a crime, a crime of incitement to terrorism, and a crime of incitement to terrorism, charges he does not recognise.
“On the contrary, I have done this nation a great service. This is the first time in 30 years of democracy that we have managed to take the issue of uncovering and removing the veil of fraud, to the extreme. We’ve taken off the mask of fraud and taken it to the point of extreme resistance against a dictatorial regime that maintains itself based on arms, based on assassinations and kidnappings,” he told journalists.
Since October 2024 and until March, Mozambique has experienced a climate of strong social unrest, with demonstrations and stoppages called by the former presidential candidate, who rejects the results of the presidential elections of 9 October, which gave victory to Daniel Chapo, supported by the ruling Frelimo, and sworn in as the country’s fifth President.
Around 400 people died as a result of clashes with the police, conflicts that ceased after meetings between Mondlane and Chapo on 23 March and 20 May with a view to pacifying the country.
