Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Police (PRM) has confirmed that the man shot dead on Tuesday in Ndlavela neighbourhood, in the southern Mozambican Municipality of Matola, was a plain clothes police officer.

According to witnesses, the man was shot while he was inside a black Toyota Mark X vehicle at the Ndlavela house that he was renting. The killers, whose identities are, so far unknown, were travelling in two vehicles. They were taking no chances, and fired at least 20 shots into the Toyota.

According to the PRM statement, the victim was a police officer with the rank of chief sergeant. “The murder took place at around 08.00 in the Mangueiras region, which falls under the jurisdiction of the seventh PRM precinct in the T3 neighbourhood, in Matola municipality”, reads the note.

The police said that “and a criminal case has been opened while investigations are ongoing to clarify the case and hold those involved criminally responsible.”

“An unspecified number of unidentified individuals, travelling in vehicles yet to be identified and armed with AK-47 assault rifles, fired shots at a black Toyota Mark X vehicle”, reads the note.

The police have pledged to “do everything to identify and detain those involved in the crime”. The police statement also called for “calm and tranquillity’ among the public.
