Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Saturday invited Algerian businesses to invest in the country.

Speaking at a meeting with business people in Algiers, at the end of a working visit to Algeria, Chapo declared “the Mozambican government is willing to support and facilitate the steps necessary so that partnerships can become a reality”.

He said that Mozambique and Algeria are “brother countries” who won their independence with mutual support and now must follow the same example to attain economic independence, and thus improve the living conditions of their peoples.

Mozambique, Chapo continued, had countless opportunities for business in hydrocarbons and energy, in the pharmaceutical industry, in tourism and aviation, and in education and training.

He pointed out that Mozambique is becoming “one of the main producers of natural gas in Africa and the world” and is seeking partners for refining the gas and using it for industrialisation.

He noted that, for the past 20 years, natural gas deposits at Temane, in the southern province of Inhambane, have been exploited by the South African petrochemical giant, Sasol.

There are now a further four natural gas projects in the north of the country with operators including the TotalEnergies of France, ExxonMobil of the United States, and the Italian energy company, ENI. Chapo put the total investment involved at around 50 billion US dollars.

Chapo said a memorandum already exists between Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) and the Algerian petroleum company, Sonatrach. He regarded this as “an important basis for strengthening staff training, for the transfer of technology and for establishing joint ventures between Mozambican and Algerian enterprises”.

As for tourism, Chapo stressed that Mozambique has 2,700 kilometres of coastline, and “an enviable cultural and historical heritage”, He announced that, in November, an international tourism conference will be held in the municipality of Vilanculo, in Inhambane province.

He suggested that if the Algerian airline, Air Algerie, were to begin regular flights between Maputo and Algiers, “this would be a great catalyst for tourism and business between the two countries”.

Chapo said that Mozambique is ready to work with Algerian businesses “to create jobs for the youth of the two countries and speed up industrialisation”.
