Maputo Province Sees Drop in Scabies Cases

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Maputo province has seen a reduction in scabies cases in the last three weeks, after a cumulative 11,400 cases last month, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.

A seemingly insignificant disease, scabies’ effects create discomfort.

Melita António, who dealt with scabies after one of her children became infected, infecting the entire family, said that, in addition to the daily difficulty of dealing with the disease, another challenge lies in the high cost of medication.

According to the head of the public health department in Maputo province, Filimone Zibia, after high case numbers last semester, there has been a reduction in the last three weeks.

Scabies is a communicable disease, but according to Zibia, proper hygiene can minimize the chances of it spreading.

Our source also mentioned that there are teams going door to door providing information to communities about the disease, aiming to prevent possible outbreaks.
