Indian Navy First Training Squadron Arrives in Maputo

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The First Training Squadron of the Indian Navy comprising INS Tir, ICGS Sarathi, INS Shardul and INS Sujata entered Maputo port, Mozambique on 16 September 2025. Besides its regular crew, the Squadron is embarked with nearly 100 sea trainee cadets from the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, where two officer cadets from Mozambique are also currently undergoing pre-commission training. The visit reflects India’s commitment to enhanced maritime partnership through joint training and capacity building guided by the vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

The squadron, led by Captain Tijo K Joseph, was received at Maputo port by Colonel Puneet Attri, Defence Adviser, High Commission of India. During the four-day visit, the Training Squadron will undertake various joint training activities along-with Mozambican Navy on aspects such as diving, fire-fighting, VBSS, navigation and communication. It will finally culminate with a PASSEX (Passage Exercise) and Joint Surveillance of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries in 2019.

During their stay at Maputo, the senior officers of the Squadron shall make courtesy calls on military and civil dignitaries. In addition, with the support of Indian High Commission, Maputo and the host administration, various social-cultural events are being organised such as yoga session, community outreach, joint medical camps, visit of school children onboard, support to local orphanage and friendly sports fixtures to foster camaraderie and people-to-people connect.

HE Mr Robert Shetkintong, the High Commissioner of India to Mozambique interacted with the commanding officers of the visiting ships. He emphasised that the deployment is a reflection of India’s commitment to peace, prosperity and collective security in the region. He further added that this visit reaffirms the close bond of friendship between India & Mozambique as the two nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relationship in 2025.
