Africa-Press – Mozambique. Spokesperson for the PRM in Nampula, Zacarias Nacute, has reported that a 35-year-old man died in a mine collapse in Mazua administrative post, Memba district, Nampula province.
Nacute said the incident took place when an illegal gold mine collapsed, killing the miner on the spot.
According to Nacute, the information arrived through other artisanal miners who were present and had tried, without success, to help the victim.
The incident happened in an illegal mining area and the police have been making appeals to the population regarding these situations. Insufficient numbers of police in the district make it difficult to monitor all illegal mining sites.
The death of artisanal miners in gold mines in Memba has been recurrent.
Last year, dozens of people died in the district as a result of a landslide in an artisanal mine, where many young people were mining for gold.
