Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican authorities have extended the third phase of the national vaccination campaign against the Covid-19 respiratory disease by another month.

The third phase should have ended on Tuesday, but it will now continue to 20 December.

According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, in the previous 24 hours 67,052 people were vaccinated. To date, 3,095,180 people have been fully vaccinated against the disease, and 5,998,068 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The release reported that, since the start of the pandemic, 964,135 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,621 of them in the previous 24 hours,

1,615 of these tests gave negative results, and six people tested positive for the coronavirus. Five of the new cases were men, and one was a woman. There were two cases each from Maputo city, Maputo province, and Zambezia.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Thursday was 0.37 per cent, lower than the rates earlier in the week of 0.54 per cent on Wednesday, 1.47 per cent on Tuesday, 0.8 per cent on Monday, and 0.9 per cent on Sunday.

Over the same 24 hour period, one new patient was hospitalised (in Matola) and no Covid-19 patients were discharged. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities rose from six on Wednesday to seven on Thursday. Two of these patients were in Maputo, two in Matola and one each in Zambezia, Sofala and Inhambane.

For the third consecutive day, the Ministry did not report any deaths from Covid-19. Thus the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 1,936.

There were also no recoveries from Covid-19 on Thursday. The total number of recoveries remains 149,407, or 98.6 per cent of all those diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 119 on Wednesday to 125 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 32; Nampula, 28; Maputo city, 16; Gaza, 14; Manica, nine; Niassa, five; Zambezia, five; Tete, five; Inhambane, five; Sofala, three; and Maputo province, three.
