Africa-Press – Mozambique. The 35th anniversary of the Homoíne massacre in Inhambane, which was marked on Monday, 18 July, should serve as a moment of reflection on the need to preserve peace and national unity, culture and tourism authorities in Inhambane province say.
It was on July 18, 1987 that Homoíne experienced one of the worst events in memory: the massacre of nearly 400 people, 350 of whom were buried in a mass grave.
Susária do Amaral, head of the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries at the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism in Inhambane, said that the massacre was a clear example of war’s negative impact on society.
Children in particular, Susária said, must be told about the mass grave and receive instruction in the value of peace and national unity.
