Africa-Press – Mozambique. Renowned Mozambican lawyer and social activist Maria Alice Mabote died today, of an illness, in South Africa. Mabota served as president of the Human Rights League of Mozambique, where she stood out for her strong social intervention.
Maria Alice Mabota was born in 1949, at the Hospital de Soao José de Lhanguene, now called Hospital Geral José Macamo, in the City of Maputo.
In 1995, together with other Mozambican activists and intellectuals, Mabota founded the Human Rights League of Mozambique.
In 2019, Alice Mabota presented her candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, in the general elections that took place on December 15th. The formalization was done through the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), which, in this way, made history with Mabota as the first woman to ever to run forPresident of Mozambique..
In 2022, Alice Mabota stood out as one of the lawyers for one of 19 defendants in theso-called ‘hidden debts case’. Her constituent, Khessaujee Pulchand, was acquitted.
Mabota passed away at the age of 74.
