Africa-Press – Mozambique. The start of construction work on the fishing port of Angoche, on the south coast of Nampula province, is planned for next July, President Filipe Nyusi announced on Saturday in Chocas-Mar district of Mossuril, in Nampula province.
Nyusi made these statements during the inauguration of the fish market in Chocas-Mar, a world-renowned tourist destination.
“The fishing port of Angoche will represent the highest point of recognition of the importance of the fishing sector in that district. The Namethyl-Angche road, under construction, will make it possible to transport fish, in great quantity and quality, from that region to the rest of the country and the world,” President Nyusi announced.
President Nyusi highlighted the importance that the government attributes to facilities of this type, there already being one of the same type in Namige, Mogincual district. Construction of another one in Larde will also enhance economic infrastructure in the fishing sector.
“The construction of this Chocas-Mar fish market reflects the government’s commitment to creating infrastructural conditions so that the Mozambican people can develop in a sustainable way, thus improving the quality of their lives,” the president noted.

Nyusi said that the intention was to develop fishing activities commercially, supporting the creation of conditions so that artisanal operators could reduce post-capture losses and improve marketing within recommended hygienic and sanitary standards.
To those involved in the value chain that comprises the combination of capture, conservation, commercialization and transport, Nyusi said that the implementation of the fish market reflected the government’s commitment to diversifying the national economy.
On the same occasion he recalled the recent tragedy of the drowning of around 100 people from Lunga, also in the district of Mossuril, off the Island of Mozambique, while fleeing their homes due to misinformation.
Nyusi said that the government, in addition to improving living conditions with the implementation and improvement of social services, would use community information media to better communicate with communities, minimising misinformation and unrest caused by rumours.
Nampula province has ten coastal districts where aquaculture is also practised and, in 2023, its fish production was 97,440 tons.
