Africa-Press – Mozambique. Chairman of the Mozambican Human Rights Network, Adriano Nuvunga, this Wednesday denounced the alleged intention to extradite an Angolan whistle-blower, calling on the Mozambican authorities to reverse the decision.
“The main concern of human rights activists in the region is that the young ‘ Man Gena’ is at serious risk of being silenced in Angola, where the Mozambican authorities. who allege illegal entry into national territory, want to send him back to,” the Mozambican Human Rights Network said in a communique..
This campaign is highlighted in a video posted on social media by Adriano Nuvunga, a human rights activist, who stressed this Wednesday that if Eugenio Quintas, colloquially known as ‘Man Gena’, has no documents, it is because he fled Angola to save his life and that of his family (two children and a pregnant wife), who are also in Maputo.
“He came to Mozambique seeking asylum,” Nuvunga said, stressing that “his only crime was exposing drug trafficking with the alleged involvement of the Angolan political elite”.
In addition to the Mozambican authorities, Nuvunga is calling on the “Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU) and the entire international community to avoid his being deported to Angola, as it could lead to “another politically driven assassination of a human rights defender” in the region.
The persecution appears to be continuing in Maputo, according to the Mozambique Network of Human Rights Defenders.
The organization reports that Man Gena was the target of a kidnapping attempt in the Mozambican capital on Sunday, causing him to seek police protection. He was eventually detained for allegedly illegally entering Mozambique, and is currently still in custody, along with his wife and two children.
“In accordance with the Constitution, the laws and the international conventions signed by Mozambique, the state is obliged to provide asylum to all persons who are unjustly persecuted because of their views,” the Mozambique Network of Human Rights Defenders adds.
Lusa sought clarification from the National Migration Service of Mozambique (SENAMI) but has not so far received a response.
An official source told Lusa in Luanda that the Angolan authorities have not made any extradition request, although there are ongoing criminal proceedings against the young man in Angola.
