Armed men attack barracks in Nairoto, Cabo Delgado

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A group of about 80 armed men attacked, at around midnight on Sunday, the barracks of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, at the Nairoto administrative post, in Montepuez district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

According to the Secretariat of the Nairoto post, cited in Tuesday’s issue of the independent newsletter “Carta de Moçambique”, the terrorists initially attacked the joint position of the defence and security forces, killing five people. They then began stealing weapons, uniforms, ammunition and food, and occupied the area for about five hours.

“In addition to killing (soldiers) and stealing property, the terrorists burned four vehicles, including one belonging to the border guard, and one that had just supplied food to the barracks, in addition to a grader that was in service along the Montepuez-Mueda road”, the source said.

This is the second attack in Montepuez district in about a week. This latest one, however, is considered major, judging by the level of damage caused and the audacity of attacking a combined force of the military and police.

The area attacked is about 30 kilometres from a gold mine owned by Nairoto Resources Limitada, which is operated by the companies Mwiriti and Montepuez Ruby Mining.
