Africa-Press – Mozambique. The spokesperson for the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Leonel Muchina, said today that around 2,500 people have illegally occupied a space reserved for the construction of a parliamentary citadel in the municipal district of Katembe.
“We had a situation of illegal occupation of a parliamentary citadel in the municipal district of Katembe and, naturally, it is necessary for the Defence and Security Forces, mainly the Police, to restore order.
We had around 2,500 citizens from Greater Maputo who proposed to go to this place that we mentioned and carried out the effective occupation, building huts and stalls, but it is a space that is restricted for the construction of this citadel that I mentioned”, said Leonel Muchina, during the PRM briefing on the situation in the country.
Leonel Muchina also condemned the roadblocks and acts of vandalism. “Recognizing and respecting that protesting is a constitutional right, the right to life, free movement and the right to work are also constitutional. Under the law, no one can be coerced into taking part or not in a demonstration,” he explained.
Muchina also said that if appeals are exhausted and demonstrations result in vandalism, legitimate means of dispersing the masses are used, such as tear gas.
“There are social services that are being jeopardized, people cannot access hospitals, precisely because some believe that their right has greater value than others, and in these circumstances there is sometimes a need to disperse the masses to allow access to the road,” said Leonel Muchina.
