Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Association of Road Transporters of Gaza (ASTROGAZA) is distributing tires to passenger and cargo transport operators affiliated to the association, as part of measures to mitigate road accidents.

According to Amade Jala, the president of ASTROGAZA, just over 100 tires will be distributed free of charge, at a cost to the association of 420,000 meticais – all contributed by members.

“Each member will receive two tires. We know that this on its own is not enough, but the measure will at least partially alleviate the problem of worn tires, which can lead to accidents,” Jala explained.

The governor of Gaza, Margarida Mapandzene Chongo, who symbolically gave away the tires, congratulated ASTROGAZA on the initiative, noting that tire condition is fundamental to road safety.

“Almost 90 percent of road accidents that occur on our roads have tire wear as one of the main causes. Therefore, we believe that tires in good condition significantly reduce the risk of accidents,” she explained.

She also appealed to motorists to focus on defensive driving, with a view to reducing accidents and resulting deaths.

According to official data, Gaza province recorded a slight reduction in the number of deaths due to road accidents between January and April this year, as a result of mitigation actions carried out by local authorities.
